Min Hoo (Year 11) semi finalist in BHP Billiton Science and Engineering Awards

Congratulations to Min Hoo who was placed as a semi finalist in the BHP Billiton Science and Engineering Awards. Min’s entry was entitled “Wearing High Heels While Driving: Is it really safe?”
An abtract of the entry is below.

High heels are a common footwear fashion item amongst women; there are many different types of high heeled shoes. The purpose of this investigation, was to assess whether high heeled shoes are safe for driving. There are no specific laws in Australia that address the wearing of high heels while driving, so it isn’t law breaking, but is it safe? Flat, wedged, block high heels and high platform stiletto shoes were worn by a driver, in control of a car at 40 km/hr and 60 km/hr. Stopping time and distance were recorded. The results of the investigation showed a clear difference in stopping time and distance between these four different types of shoes, with flat shoes seemingly the safest shoes to wear while driving, followed by wedges, block high heels and high platform stilettos.
