QASMT Yr. 12 Student selected to advance to the panel interview stage of the 2016 Brisbane Women in Business Awards for the Empowering Young Women’s Award category

Congratulations to Lakshana Boominathan, Yr. 12 Student Agnesi, Instep – who has been selected to advance to the panel interview stage of the 2016 Brisbane Women in Business Awards for the Empowering Young Women’s Award category.

Lakshana has been nominated for her ongoing dedication and commitment to empowering girls to take a lead in the field of STEM education and in particular in technology. As leader of the Technology Ambassadors at QASMT Lakshana leads by example in encouraging girls to take an active role in pursuing their interest in technology.  She has established a Gaming Club at QASMT which are usually the preserve of boys only, where girls can come and watch and learn by playing, designing and talking about games. In the past the technology ambassadors concentrated on fixing other students computers and fixing glitches but now Lakshana has specifically encouraged the Yr. 10 female ambassadors to get involved in promoting technology across the campus such as study apps, new technology innovations and engaging with the wider school community. Supporting and encouraging girls to get involved in STEM is not only important for the future of Queensland but for the girls themselves. When women develop careers in STEM they earn 33% more than women in non-stem occupations. Increasing girl’s interest and passion for STEM allows huge opportunities for discovery and innovation.
