The ASCEND Program: Pathways to the Future is a four-year, academic enrichment and preparation program designed to support highly capable learners, prior to Year 10 entry into the Queensland Academy for Science Mathematics and Technology (QASMT). The program is invitational, based on performance in the Year 7 selective entry application process.
Through this program, students will have the chance to:
- participate in STEM-focused research projects, workshops, lectures, tutorials and excursions
- work alongside QASMT specialist teachers and student ambassadors in STEM education
- learn from our university and industry expert partners
- connect with like-minded peers both face-to-face, and online in our vibrant virtual community (Years 6-9).
Students who successfully graduate from this program will gain an automatic offer of entry into QASMT's International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Preparation Program for Year 10.
The ASCEND Program
With a focus on critical thinking, real-world problem solving, and future-focused capabilities, ASCEND helps students grow beyond the standard curriculum — developing the academic mindset, confidence, and strategic thinking prior to commencing the International Baccalaureate Diploma Program (DP) in the senior years of schooling. ASCEND is spiralling, with each stage offering a unique 'flavour' aligned to each year of schooling. A broad range of learning experiences are delivered as face-to-face and/or online options.
- Stage 1: Empower (Aligned to Year 6)
Seeks to empower students as learners by extending self-belief, motivation, and ownership of learning through a focused approach on active study techniques, intrapersonal skills and mindfulness. It is also a year to make new friendships and become familiar with the QASMT school campus.
- Stage 2: Enrich (Aligned to Year 7)
Focuses on refining and enriching academic knowledge and research skills though teacher-led sessions and culminating in the conduct of an independent research project in collaboration with like-minded peers. It is STEM rich and brimming with relevant and engaging hands-on learning opportunities.
- Stage 3: Excel (Aligned to Year 8)
Prepares students for excellence by providing a supportive environment for students to present their research as either a poster presentation or a 3-minute thesis style presentation to an authentic audience as part of National Science Week celebrations. Essential STEM communication and fluency skills are a feature of the year for our budding scientists.
- Stage 4: Enrol (Aligned to Year 9) Prepares students for Year 10 entry by nurturing and strengthening personal relationships between existing and incoming QASMT students, prior to Year 10 entry. An overnight 'sleepover' will be a culminating student activity, and an opportunity for both students and parents to make deeper connections.
ASCEND is more than an extension program — it's a launchpad for future success!
