There are many opportunities for students at QASMT to engage in sport. The Academy's Sport Program has several tiers, aimed at catering for a variety of abilities, experience and levels of competition. These tiers are inter-house, inter-school Gala day and representative (including district, regional, state and national programs). All sport opportunities at QASMT inlcude qualified professional coaches.
INTER-HOUSE SPORTING COMPETITIONS
Students at QASMT participate in a variety of inter-House competitions throughout the year. These include the Athletics Carnival and the school Cross Country. Students at these events also participate in a range of mixed sports (including War Cry competitions, and novelty events including Dodgeball and novelty relay races). These events are desgined to strengthen House spirit and foster a positive school culture.
QASMT SCHOOL SPORTS PROGRAM
The Sports Program is an optional, paid program that caters for all levels of abilities and experience. The professional coaching team aims to provide a balance between development of skills, playing in a team environment and having fun. Students from Years 7-12 are able to participate.
YEARS 7-9
The Year 7 and Year 9 programs run on Wednesday afternoon from 1:45 - 2.45pm. The Year 8 program runs on Thursday afternoons from 2:15 - 3:15pm. Sessions will be facilitated by qualified coaches. The sports offered will be aligned with the West Brisbane Senior School Sport Association (WBSSSA) inter-school sporting competitions. A range of sports including Basketball, Volleyball, Netball, Soccer, and Touch Football, are offered alongside several other activities designed to provide students with variety and engagement.
All students at QASMT are eligible to trial for the Gala day sports however; the students involved in the Sport Program will have the advantage of having access to a qualified coach across the term, skill development and practice.
YEARS 10-12
The program runs on Wednesday afternoons from 2:45 - 3:45pm and will be facilitated by qualified coaches. The sports are divided into a Summer (Term 1) and Winter (Term 2) program that is aligned with the sports offered in the WBSSSA inter-school sporting competitions. All students at QASMT are eligible to trial for the Gala day sports however, the students involved in the sports program will have the advantage of having access to a qualified coach, skill development and practice.
WBSSSA GALA DAYS
QASMT participates in Inter-School sport in the WBSSSA. The Association is comprised of QASMT, Kenmore SHS, Indooroopilly SHS, Centenary SHS, Corinda SHS, Yeronga SHS and BSSSC. The association holds a series of full day sporting Gala days which are ususally held at the beginning and end of Term. The Junior gala days are usually are at the end of Term 1, 2, 3 and Senior Gala day is traditionally at the beginning of Term 2 and 3. The Gala Days are a full day competition in a variety of sports. In the Gala sport program students are eligible for selection in the QASMT teams to participate in the Gala Days.
REPRESENTATIVE SPORT
QASMT participates in the Northern Eagles (NE) District, which is apart of the Metropolitan West (MetWest) Region for school sport. Trials for District teams take place throughout the year, and students will be notified of trial dates via email and DayMap. Students wishing to nominate for District trials must be approved by the Representative Sports Coordinator and the Principal. Once nominations eligibility is confirmed by Respresentative Sports Coordinator, students are to complete the Student Representative Checklist and email this to the Respresentative Sports Coordinator. District trials are for students who are aiming to make the Metropolitan West Regional team to play at the State Championships. The purpose of the District trials is to facilitate students' pathways to representative sport. Therefore, students nominating for representative sport must be participating at a high level.
NORTHERN EAGLES DISTRICT TRIALS
Information about trials will be released progressively throughout the year and published here when it becomes available.
Process for trials
- Students are notified via email and Daymap when trial nominations are due.
- Student eligibilty will then be confirmed by the Representative Sport Coordinator.
- Once eligibilty is confirmed students are to complete the Student Representative Checklist and email it to the Representative Sports Coordinator.
- Students will receive a confirmation email notifying them that their nomination has been approved and paperwork (student permission booklet, principal permission form and district trial notice) is being processed for their trial.
VOLLEYBALL ACADEMY
QASMT is proud to offer a Volleyball Academy for selected students. The Academy is designed to further develop students’ volleyball skills and prepare them for external competitions and interschool matches.
Trials for the Volleyball Academy are held during the middle of Term 1, with training sessions running throughout most of the year. A participation fee applies to support access to expert coaching. Students selected for the Academy are also required to purchase the official QASMT Volleyball uniform from the Uniform Shop, which is worn during competitions.
