The Music Program at Queensland Academy of Science Mathematics and Technology (QASMT) offers a place for every student regardless of ability or background.  We offer tailored experiences across group lessons and ensembles.

This program is a vibrant and integral part of the Academy and provides students across Years 7-12 with the opportunity to participate through curriculum lessons with specialist teachers, a varied range of ensemble offerings and subsequent rehearsal and performance opportunities that cater to our diverse community. The Music Program provides Year 11 and 12 IBDP students with a choice between two participation options:

Students may choose one of the following:

a) Curriculum (Years 7 – 10)

This option includes mandatory weekly group lessons on a selected instrument and membership of a nominated core music ensemble

b) Ensembles (Years 11 – 12)

This option focuses on involvement in a core ensemble only, without weekly group lessons. To be eligible to choose the Ensembles pathway, students need to confirm their current engagement in private music lessons and/or attainment of AMEB Level 6 or higher on a selected instrument.

The QASMT Music Program is audition-based and organized around instrumental families as follows:

Brass:

Baritone, Euphonium, French horn, Flugelhorn, Trombone, Trumpet, Tuba

Percussion:

Tuned and untuned instruments including auxiliary and mallet instruments

Strings:

Violin, Viola, Cello, Double bass, Bass guitar

Woodwind:

Flute, Oboe, Clarinet, Saxophone

At QASMT, we pursue personal excellence and flourish holistically through purposeful engagement with The Arts. As a member of the Music Program, very high standards of commitment, organisation and reliability are required of each student.

The expectations of QASMT Music Program students are that they:

  • attend all mandatory lessons and/or rehearsals and performances
  • if your student will not be attending a scheduled session parents/caregivers must notify us through the school's Student Absence process before the scheduled lesson/rehearsal/performance when possible
  • are on time with all their equipment for every rehearsal, lesson and performance
  • maintain and care for their instrument and store it safely and tidily
  • maintain a neat and accurate folder of sheet music, clearly labelled with their name
  • check upcoming important dates on the music noticeboard and Daymap
  • always participate to the best of their ability
  • practice regularly and learn their parts before attending weekly rehearsals
  • follow directions from teachers and conductors
  • work as part of a team and treat others with respect and kindness.

We ask that as parents/guardians you support the QASMT Music Program by:

  • regularly checking emails and the Daymap Calendar for information regarding upcoming events
  • ensuring that your student is practicing regularly
  • taking reasonable steps to ensure the safety of school instruments and equipment
  • following the school's Student Absence process before scheduled lessons/ rehearsals/performances when possible
  • ensuring that your student attends rehearsals and performances on time
  • returning permission letters promptly to the school
  • supporting our involvement in competitions.

Group lessons

Instrumental Music lessons are offered for 30-35 minutes per week on a rotation timetable, so students do not miss out on the same subject class each week. Our teachers offer a wealth of experience and enthusiasm to inspire a sequential development of skills and nurture growth. The Department of Education Instrumental Music curriculum includes band and orchestral instruments, organised in families, or strands. There are limited instruments owned by the school that can be loaned depending on availability.

Years 7 – 10 Students: Lessons take place during the school day and students leave class to attend their music lesson

Years 11 – 12 Students: Lessons take place outside of their timetable class time by negotiation.

Opportunities

Students are offered opportunities throughout the year including:

  • Evening and lunchtime concerts.
  • Performances at assemblies and at special events.
  • Professional standard conducting and tutoring sessions.
  • Competitions and Festivals (e.g. Fanfare)
  • Workshops and Masterclasses.
