Following his graduation from SMT in 2010, Nathan was accepted into the University of Queensland, where he undertook a Bachelor of Engineering and later progressed to a combined Bachelor/Master program, majoring in Chemical and Environmental Engineering.
During his studies, Nathan completed a six-month industry placement with Brisbane Airport Corporation, where he conducted a feasibility study for an on-site biogas facility. In his final year (2016), he was offered a position in the National Australia Bank Graduate Program (Risk Stream) and to relocated to Melbourne.Since then, Nathan has built a career in financial services, specialising in risk management. The pivot from engineering was unconventional — he backed himself, and it worked. He has held roles at NAB, Bendigo Bank and now Westpac.
“SMT taught me a valuable life lesson: be open to new opportunities. Listen to your instincts, then take a calculated risk."
At Bendigo Bank, he played a key role in leading credit portfolio management for the Business Banking Division during the onset of COVID-19, assessing the impact of lockdowns and developing strategies to support both customers and the organisation.
Today, he leads a team of data analysts at Westpac, identifying and mitigating risks across technology, data, cyber and fraud. As AI reshapes the risk landscape, he believes that sound judgement under uncertainty remains an essential human contribution.
Now based in Melbourne, Nathan is a husband and father of two boys. Outside of work, he enjoys building projects at home and spending time teaching and learning alongside his children.
