Sai Valluru reflects on his time at QASMT with a sense of perspective that extends beyond academic results. Graduating in 2016 with an IB score of 39, he acknowledges that, within a cohort characterised by exceptional academic ability, where outcomes often exceed 40, his result appeared modest by comparison.

However, Sai has come to recognise that the true value of his QASMT experience was not defined by a numerical score, but by the broader capabilities, mindset, and opportunities the Academy fostered, an outcome consistent with its commitment to developing internationally minded, well-rounded graduates prepared for future pathways.

“The environment is what the school really gives you. One that encourages growth, personal development, and diversity of thinking, particularly critical thinking. When the people around you take their work seriously, it naturally lifts your own standards. You don't have to force motivation — the environment creates it."

Sai studied Civil Engineering at the University of Queensland, where he was awarded a scholarship and graduated with First Class Honours. He joined AECOM in 2021 as a graduate engineer, contributing to major infrastructure projects including Cross River Rail, the Cooroy to Curra Motorway Extension, and, more recently, the Rockhampton Ring Road. On this project, he works as an independent consultant, focusing on its commercial and contractual delivery.
Through his work, Sai has found that the most valuable lessons extend beyond technical knowledge.

“Engineering is the easy part. The harder part is working with people, understanding what they need, communicating clearly when things don't go to plan, and making decisions with incomplete information. University teaches you how to solve defined problems; the workplace teaches you how to navigate undefined ones."

Sai is currently working towards his Chartered Professional Engineer (CPEng) and RPEQ registration. He aims to build a career in technical advisory in infrastructure, working at the intersection of engineering, commercial strategy, and investment.

Reflecting on his time at QASMT, Sai credits the school and the IB programme with shaping his mindset as much as his academic ability.

“The two most valuable things I gained weren't academic. The IB Learner Profile, being open-minded, reflective, and a lifelong inquirer has become a framework I carry into everything. Engineering changes, Industries change, but the ability to approach new challenges with curiosity is what allows you to adapt."

What Sai cherishes most about QASMT is the lasting impact of its community. The standard of work, set of habits, and shared drive of his peers created an environment that encouraged everyone to grow. Many of his classmates have gone on to become engineers at Amazon, medical professionals in hospitals, and managers at consulting firms. People who once supported him through assignments: now continue to support him in their professional fields and expertise.
