Max Wu graduated from QASMT in 2017 before moving to Sydney to study a Bachelor of Medical Science at the University of New South Wales, majoring in Anatomy. His interest in the biological processes underlying health and disease, he completed an Honours research year in an ageing laboratory, investigating medications targeting mitochondrial health and their potential to promote healthy ageing and extend healthspan. After graduating university, Max worked in healthcare strategy consulting, where he gained insight into health systems, organisational decision-making, and the delivery of care at scale. He subsequently commenced the Doctor of Medicine at the University of Sydney, bringing together his interests in biomedical science, research, and patient care.
Much of Max's clinical training has taken place at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital (RPAH), where he developed a strong connection with both the hospital and its community. He has chosen to remain at RPAH for his early postgraduate residency years. During medical school, Max also pursued research and clinical experiences internationally through the University of Auckland in New Zealand and the National University of Singapore.
Alongside his clinical training, Max remains actively involved in research into skin health and dermatological disease. He has also contributed to the coordination of medical conferences and healthcare programs. Continuing his passion for making healthcare knowledge more accessible, Max is collaborating with leading dermatologists across Australasia to develop practical educational modules that help clinicians detect skin cancer earlier and improve outcomes for patients.
Looking ahead, Max hopes to become a clinician-researcher working at the interface of dermatology and ageing science, combining clinical practice, education, and research to improve patient care.
Max reflects on his time at QASMT as an enriching and invaluable experience that shaped his academic interests, confidence, and future direction. In 2023, he returned to speak with QASMT's graduating cohort, sharing his experiences since leaving the Academy. Mentorship remains an important part of his work, and he is actively involved in mentoring programs at the University of Sydney and through broader student and professional organisations. He warmly welcomes aspiring QASMT students interested in medicine, research, or healthcare to reach out and connect.
