After graduating from QASMT in 2021, Edward Chou commenced his pathway into medicine through the University of the Sunshine Coast Medical Science provisional entry program, which led to the Doctor of Medicine at Griffith University. He found both degrees highly valuable in shaping his academic and professional development.
During his Medical Science studies, Edward gained early exposure to biomedical research by shadowing a PhD student and contributing to a research project investigating the correlation between virulence genes associated with E. coli and Inflammatory Bowel Disease. In recognition of his outstanding academic performance, he graduated from Medical Science in 2024 with a University Medal for Academic Excellence.
Now in his second year of the Doctor of Medicine, Edward is enjoying the breadth of the clinical sciences and the opportunities the course offers to explore different specialty areas in greater depth. He is particularly looking forward to beginning clinical placements at Sunshine Coast University Hospital, where he will learn in a multidisciplinary healthcare environment.
Looking ahead, Edward hopes to gain experience in rural practice in Far North Queensland, broadening his perspective while contributing to communities with diverse healthcare needs. He is also considering further postgraduate study, such as a Master of Public Health or a Master of Epidemiology in the UK or the US, as he works towards a future career as a GP or internal medicine physician.
Reflecting on his time at QASMT, Edward deeply cherishes his time as being surrounded by highly motivated and brilliant minds taught him the value of humility. He recognises that the academic rigour of the IB gave him independence, as well as the courage and confidence to take on future challenges.
