Miskin Cup Chess

This week began with the return of a beloved interschool tradition, the Miskin Cup Competition against our neighbours at Brisbane Boys' College. It was so heartwarming to see twenty-two of our students step up to represent QASMT for the Chess Event, each facing a BBC opponent in two 30-minute games.

The room was a sea of quiet concentration as matches began, and I was struck by the intensity and composure on our players' faces. The effort and strategy each student put into their games was commendable, especially Nikola, Andrew and Ayden, who managed to triumph in both rounds against their opponents. Their double victories showed true mental agility and resilience.

Although we weren't able to retain the Miskin Cup this year, with BBC taking the win 29.5 to 14.5, I couldn't be prouder of our team. Chess Team Captain Bella closed the event with grace, thanking BBC for hosting and congratulating their players on a well-earned win. Our students represented QASMT with quiet confidence, good sportsmanship, and respect, the kind of values that truly matter, win or lose.

Year 10 VET Course

From Monday to Wednesday, our Year 10 students undertaking the VET Pathway stepped away from their usual timetables and into a hands-on, immersive learning experience that showcased just how powerful applied learning can be.

Across the three days, students demonstrated their growing expertise in the Certificate II in Sampling and Measurement and the Certificate III in Laboratory Skills, working through a range of practical tasks to show their competency and understanding. Watching them in action, I saw emerging scientists and technicians coming into their own, confidently performing tasks, collaborating with their peers, and solving real-world problems with poise.

I was so impressed by the independence and professionalism on display. It's in these moments that the power of vocational education really shines, giving students a taste of the world beyond the classroom, and helping them see the many pathways open to them in science and technology. A huge congratulations to all involved. I'm very proud of the effort and maturity shown throughout this experience.

Staff Vs Students Dodgeball

Thursday saw the much-anticipated Staff vs Students Dodgeball Match take over the basketball courts during second break, and what a joyful, rowdy showdown it was! The sides were packed with cheering students, and the excitement in the air was absolutely contagious.

With a bright winter sun overhead, both teams brought energy and flair to the game. Dodgeballs flew, players ducked and dodged, and spectators laughed and gasped in equal measure. It was the kind of event that captures the spirit of QASMT perfectly: fun, inclusive, competitive, and filled with community connection.

In the end, the staff emerged victorious! Regardless of the outcome, it was wonderful to see our students and staff sharing in such spirited fun, and let's just say, some surprising dodgeball skills were revealed on both sides!

Festival of Creativity

Friday night saw our campus transformed into an absolute wonderland of expression, culture, and celebration as we hosted the annual Festival of Creativity, one of the most joyful nights of the school year.

Walking through the grounds, I was completely swept up in the atmosphere. The music echoed across the Electric Stage, where bands and musicians poured their energy into every beat.

On the Dance Stage, student dancers wowed us with polished routines and infectious enthusiasm.

The Laneway Stage offered smaller and more intimate performances that showed just how deep our students' talents run.

In the Refectory, the Art Showcase took my breath away. Works in every medium - painting, creative writing, sculpture, digital design - filled the space with creativity and bold vision. What moved me most was not just the technical skill, but the emotion embedded in so many pieces. It reminded me of the incredible depth of thought and expression that lives within our students and staff.

Of course, no QASMT event would be complete without our iconic Year 12 dance, and this year's routine had the whole crowd cheering and laughing with delight, especially once the traditional teacher cameos in the dance made their celebrity appearances at the end of it.

The night closed with performances from our winning and runner-up Battle of the Bands acts, alongside a stellar set from our staff band, which had everyone dancing and singing along. There's something magical about seeing students and teachers connect through music and performance.

And let's not forget the delicious food stalls that filled our courtyard with global flavours! From the vibrant colours of 'A Taste of South Asia' and 'A Trip to East Asia', to the mouth-watering BBQ and decadent desserts, every bite was a treat. The Pink Stall supporting Share the Dignity, and our Robotics and Technology Ambassadors' interactive showcase, added meaning and inspiration to the evening. A huge thank you to our amazing parent and student volunteers who made it all possible! Your time, care and spirit made this night shine.

None of this would have been possible without the incredible effort of our parent, student, and staff volunteers. From our generous parents who hosted and managed the food stalls with warmth and hospitality, to our talented production and arts students who worked tirelessly behind the scenes to bring every stage, spotlight and artwork to life; your dedication did not go unnoticed. A heartfelt thank you also goes to our amazing staff who helped with ticket collection, event supervision, setup and packdown, and more. It truly takes a village to run an event of this scale, and I am so deeply grateful to be part of a community that comes together so wholeheartedly to celebrate and support our students.

Student Achievements

We are thrilled to celebrate a rising star in our Year 9 cohort this week. Congratulations to Allyssa, who has been selected to join the Australian Volleyball Association (AVA) Queensland Program!

This high-performance development program identifies and trains future elite volleyballers for state and national teams. Allyssa's selection is a testament to her talent, work ethic and dedication to the sport. To be recognised at this level in Year 9 is no small feat, and we are incredibly proud of her.

I couldn't help but smile when Mr Conway commented “Watch out for Allyssa in the Brisbane 2032 Olympics!" I wouldn't be surprised one bit. Congratulations, Allyssa! QASMT is cheering you on every step of the way.

Looking Ahead
And now, as we enter the final week of Term 2, we've still got plenty of wonderful moments to look forward to!

Week 10 brings our Sustainability Week, which will feature engaging student-led initiatives, lunchtime activities, and our always popular Sustainable Fashion Parade, an event that showcases innovation and eco-conscious creativity like no other. I can't wait to see the thoughtful designs and the messages behind them.

We'll also be holding our rescheduled Athletics Carnival, where house pride will be on full display as students compete in track and field events with passion and sportsmanship. It's always a highlight of the term, and I'll be there cheering loudly from the sidelines in my rainbow colours.

As always, thank you for being such a supportive community. Let's finish Term 2 strong, together.

Warm regards,

Ms Kath Kayrooz

Principal
