Transition Day for Incoming Year 7's
This week, we had the pleasure of welcoming our incoming Year 7 students for 2025 as they joined us for their second Transition Day. The day began with the exciting sorting ceremony, where students were introduced to their new houses and met their House Deans and QASMT student House Ambassadors.
The students spent the day engaging in team-building games, learning about the school's values and expectations, and participating in a fun scavenger hunt designed to help them familiarise themselves with the campus. It was wonderful to see the enthusiasm and energy of our newest members of the QASMT community, and we look forward to watching them grow and thrive in the years ahead.
In addition to the student-focused activities, we hosted a meet and greet for new parents. This was a wonderful opportunity to connect with our families and further promote our parent engagement strategy, which continues to flourish within our community. Building strong relationships with our families is a cornerstone of the QASMT experience, and we were delighted to see the enthusiasm and support from our new parents as they joined our vibrant school community.
Australian Science Fair
Ian, Ermia, and Siddharth in Year 11 represented QASMT at the Australian Science Fair in Melbourne this week, where they showcased their research project on Noise Cancellation: Analogue vs Digital. Their presentation captivated the judges and earned them an honourable mention at this prestigious event.
The Science Fair brought together some of the brightest young minds in the country, and our students demonstrated exceptional creativity, analytical skills, and professionalism. Congratulations to Ian, Ermia, and Siddharth for their outstanding achievement and for representing QASMT with distinction on the national stage.
Movember Wrap-Up
Throughout November, QASMT staff participated in Movember, growing moustaches to raise awareness and funds for men's health initiatives, including prostate cancer, testicular cancer, mental health, and suicide prevention.
Movember is a vital campaign that addresses significant health challenges faced by men and promotes conversations around these often-overlooked issues.
Junior Honours at UQ
Our MYP Honours students had a unique opportunity to immerse themselves in the fascinating world of mathematics and science during an excursion to UQ. The day was filled with hands-on activities and engaging challenges led by UQ's top academics.
The students explored graph theory with Dr Sara Davies, creatively adding new “vertices" to the classic game of Rock, Paper, Scissors, and devising their own hand signs like “human" and “glue." Prof Jess Mar introduced them to data analysis, starting with wage growth graphs (Santas vs other professions!) and leading into a campus scavenger hunt, where teams solved mathematical and observational puzzles, including photographing the Building 64 sign - the largest cubed building number on campus.
Dr Samantha Stehbens captivated students with her research on cell movement, showcasing how cancer cells navigate tight spaces, while Yusra Rabini demonstrated the use of gold-salt solutions in wound healing applications. Andrew Schnell delved into the mathematics of medical imaging, helping students understand how to calculate brain cortex volume.
This excursion provided a hands-on exploration of complex scientific concepts and was a fantastic opportunity for our Honours students to see how their knowledge can be applied in real-world contexts. Thank you to UQ for hosting such an enriching and inspiring day!
