National Science Week

National Science Week at QASMT was an exciting and educational experience, filled with events that inspired curiosity and engagement in STEM. The week commenced with a prestigious visit from the Governor of Queensland, Her Excellency, the Honourable Dr. Jeannette Young AC PSM, alongside Chief Scientist Professor Wilson, Professor Milford, and Associate Professor Romero. Our students had the unique opportunity to participate in a special assembly where they engaged in a Q&A session with these distinguished guests, discussing the future of science and STEM in Queensland. Following the assembly, our visitors toured the STEM Showcase and joined in the lunchtime activities in the courtyard.

Tuesday continued the momentum with more lunchtime activities, including a strawberry DNA extraction and a "grippy gecko" making activity, capturing the interest of many students. Later, our Years 7 and 11 students participated in Exploratory Science Workshops, where our Year 11s led their younger peers through a diverse array of STEM activities, fostering collaboration and peer learning.

Thursday was packed with highlights, starting with our annual Brunch With A Scientist event in the Research Centre. Students had the chance to sit with scientists and engineers from various fields, gaining valuable insights into potential future STEM pathways. The excitement continued with the classic coke and mentos experiment in the courtyard, where jets of soda soared into the air, drawing cheers from the crowd.

That afternoon, our STEM Showcase in the Auditorium featured impressive research projects, with students proudly presenting their work to staff, family members, and fellow students. The day culminated in our Science Colloquium, where students and primary school STEM scholars delivered presentations on their research projects, showcasing their hard work and scientific inquiry.

Peter Doherty Awards

We are incredibly proud to announce that our very own Dr Kirsten Hogg has been honoured with the Peter Doherty Award for Outstanding Teacher of STEM. Dr Hogg's dedication to inspiring and guiding students in the sciences has had a profound impact on our school community, and we are so proud of her achievements.

In addition, two of our Year 12 students, Nerissa and Kelvin, were recognised with the Outstanding Senior STEM Student Award, further highlighting the exceptional talent and achievements within our academy. These awards are a testament to the commitment to excellence in STEM education at QASMT.

Ski Trip

Our Year 10 students and staff recently returned from an exhilarating ski trip to Perisher, where they spent a week navigating the slopes and enjoying the winter wonderland. The trip was filled with laughter, camaraderie, and the thrill of racing down the snowy mountains. Whether they were seasoned skiers or hitting the slopes for the first time, everyone had a fantastic time, making memories that will last a lifetime. The ski trip was a wonderful way for students to bond, challenge themselves, and experience the beauty of the Australian Alps. Whilst not officially on the ski trip (as I was on LSL), it was wonderful to see our students quickly learning new skills and challenging themselves.
